Diagnosis
My traffic dropped after Google AI Overviews. What now?
Rankings held. Impressions held. Clicks fell. That combination has a specific cause and a specific response, and it is not writing longer articles.

The short answer
If impressions and rankings held but clicks fell, your content is being used to build the answer instead of earning the visit. The loss concentrates on definitional and simple how-to queries, and barely touches branded, transactional and high-consideration commercial queries. The response is to re-weight publishing toward commercial intent, treat informational pages as citation assets rather than traffic assets, and start reporting on impressions and branded search alongside sessions.
If your organic sessions fell while your rankings held, you are not imagining it and you have not been penalised. Something structural changed above your result.
What is actually happening
Google now answers a large share of informational queries directly, at the top of the page, using content pulled from ranking pages. The user reads the answer. Often that is the whole visit. Your page supplied the material and received nothing for it.
The pattern is uneven, and the unevenness is the useful part:
| Query type | Typical impact | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Definitional, "what is" | Heavy loss | Fully answerable in a paragraph, so the click has no purpose |
| Simple how-to | Heavy loss | Same reason, especially for short procedures |
| Comparison, "X vs Y" | Moderate loss | Summarised, but buyers often still want the detail |
| Commercial, "best X in KL" | Shifted, not lost | Traffic concentrates on the two or three named brands |
| Branded, "your company name" | Largely intact | The user already decided where they are going |
| Transactional | Largely intact | The answer is not the thing the user wants |
Diagnose it properly before you react
Open Search Console and compare a period before the drop with a period after. Look at impressions and clicks separately.
- Impressions flat, clicks down, position flat. This is the AI Overviews pattern. Your visibility is intact and the click is being intercepted.
- Impressions down and position down. This is a ranking problem and has a different cause. Do not treat it as an AI issue.
- Clicks down only on informational URLs while commercial pages hold. This is the clearest confirmation, and it also tells you exactly which pages to restructure.
The part most people get wrong
The instinct is to make informational content longer and better so it wins the click back. It will not. If the query is fully answerable in a paragraph, no amount of quality persuades someone to click through for the same paragraph.
The realistic response is to change what your informational content is for. It is no longer a traffic asset. It is a citation asset. Its job is now to be the source that gets quoted and attributed, which builds brand recognition and feeds the branded searches that still convert.
What to actually do
- Re-weight toward commercial intent. Pages about choosing, comparing, pricing and hiring still earn clicks because the answer is not the thing the buyer wants. Shift your publishing budget there.
- Make informational pages easy to attribute. Clear entity naming, a strong TL;DR, specific figures. If you are going to be quoted, be quoted with your name attached.
- Track branded search as a proxy. When people encounter you inside an answer, a share of them go and search your name afterwards. That rise is the return on content that no longer earns a direct click.
- Stop reporting on sessions alone. Sessions now understate your visibility. Report impressions, branded search volume and enquiries together, which is the approach set out in how to measure AI visibility.
Should you block Google from using your content?
You can, and for most businesses it is the wrong trade. Blocking removes you from the answer without returning the click, because the answer gets built from whoever else is available. There are narrow cases where it makes sense, covered in should you block AI crawlers.
The Malaysian angle
Adoption here is behind the United States, which means two things. Your drop is probably smaller so far than the figures you are reading in American case studies. And it is still coming. Businesses that restructure now, while the pressure is moderate, are doing it under far less duress than the ones who will start in eighteen months.
