AI SEO vs traditional SEO: what actually changed

The honest version. Most of traditional SEO still applies, one part of it stopped mattering, and two new jobs appeared that nobody had to do before.

Short answer

Traditional SEO optimises for position in a ranked list of links. AI SEO optimises for inclusion in a generated answer that usually names only two or three brands. They share the same technical foundation, because answer engines mostly retrieve from sources that already rank. The difference is what happens after retrieval: AI SEO adds passage-level machine readability and off-domain citation work.

What carries over unchanged

More than the industry's marketing would suggest. Crawlability, site speed, mobile experience, internal link structure, topical depth, keyword intent matching and genuine subject expertise all still matter, and they matter for the same reason as before. Retrieval systems mostly draw from search indexes. A site that cannot be crawled or ranked will not be retrieved either.

If someone tells you AI SEO means you can ignore technical SEO, they are describing a service that will not work.

What stopped mattering

Two things, mainly.

The long tail of thin pages. Publishing forty near-identical location or service variations used to catch a slice of long-tail queries. Answer engines collapse those queries into one response, so the strategy now produces maintenance cost and little else.

Anchor text manipulation. Bought links with optimised anchors were always risky. They are also close to worthless for generative visibility, because the mention carries no credible context and sits on a source nothing retrieves from. Private blog networks are the clearest example of spend that now buys nothing at all.

What is genuinely new

Passage-level writing. Optimising the page was the old unit of work. The new unit is the passage, because that is what gets selected. A page can rank first and still contribute nothing to an answer if every paragraph needs the one above it to make sense.

Corroboration as a target. Backlinks were counted. Mentions are weighed. What matters now is whether independent sources say compatible things about you, which is a different outreach discipline with a different definition of a win. Covered on the citation building page.

How to tell what you are currently paying for

Look at your last three monthly reports from whoever handles your SEO. If every metric is a ranking position or a traffic number, and there is no measure of citation frequency, share of voice on buyer prompts, or branded search movement, you are buying traditional SEO. That is not automatically wrong. It is only wrong if you were told you were buying something else.

Ask your provider one question: which of our pages could a language model quote directly, and why? The quality of the answer tells you most of what you need to know.

What to do about it

In order. Fix the technical base, because everything else compounds on it. Rewrite your highest-intent pages at passage level so they contain answers rather than build-ups. Get your entity facts consistent everywhere. Then, and only then, start building off-domain citations, because citations pointed at an unquotable site are wasted.

AI SEO vs traditional SEO, answered

Should I stop doing traditional SEO?
No. Traditional SEO is the entry requirement for retrieval. Stopping it removes you from the candidate set that answers are built from. The change is additive, not a replacement.
Is my existing SEO agency doing AI SEO?
Check the reporting. If there is no measure of citation frequency, share of voice on buyer prompts, or off-domain mention growth, then no. Ask them directly which pages a language model could quote and why, and judge the specificity of the answer.
Which matters more for a Malaysian SME?
For most Malaysian SMEs the technical and local foundation still delivers more in the first six months, simply because so many sites have basic problems. The AI layer matters more as your buyers get younger and your category gets more researched before purchase. In practice you sequence them rather than choose.
Does AI SEO cost more than traditional SEO?
It costs more than the cheap end of the market and roughly the same as competent traditional SEO, because much of the work overlaps. Ranges are published on the pricing page.
