How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?
The question every Malaysian business owner is asking once they type their own category into a chatbot and watch someone else get named.

The short answer
You get cited by being retrievable, quotable and corroborated, in that order. Retrievable means the page can be crawled and already ranks. Quotable means individual paragraphs are specific, self-contained and safe for a model to restate. Corroborated means independent third-party sources say compatible things about your business. Most companies have done the first, almost none have done the third, and that is usually where the gap sits.
This is the most common question I get from Malaysian business owners now, and it usually arrives in the same shape. Someone typed their category into ChatGPT, saw two or three companies named, and none of them was theirs.
Why your own website is not enough
Ask any answer engine to justify a recommendation and watch what it points at. Coverage. Comparison articles. Reviews. Discussion threads. Almost never the company's own About page.
That is deliberate. A system that trusted self-description would be trivially easy to manipulate. Every business on earth would simply declare itself the best and the model would have no way to tell them apart. So the weight sits on independent sources, and your website's job changes from persuading to being retrievable and internally consistent.
Which means the ceiling on your citation frequency is set by your off-domain footprint, no matter how good your site gets. This is the single most misunderstood point in the whole field.
The four things that actually decide it
1. You have to be in the candidate set
Before a model writes anything, it retrieves. That retrieval usually draws on a search index, which means classic ranking is still the entry requirement. If you cannot be crawled or cannot rank, you are not in the pool that gets read. Nothing downstream matters.
2. Your passages have to be safe to quote
Retrieval gets you read. Selection gets you used. A model picks passages it can restate without risk of being wrong. In practice that favours:
- Paragraphs that make sense pulled out of the page, with no dependency on the sentence above them.
- Specific figures instead of adjectives. "RM2,500 to RM5,000 per month" is usable. "Affordable pricing" is not.
- Named entities instead of pronouns. "The company" forces the model to resolve a reference it might get wrong, so it often declines to try.
- Answers near the top of a section rather than after four paragraphs of build-up.
3. Your facts have to agree with themselves
If your address, service list, phone number or pricing differs across your website, your Google Business Profile and third-party listings, confidence drops. A model that is unsure which version is true will reach for a competitor whose details are consistent. Schema markup is how you state those facts in a form a machine cannot misread, which is covered in does schema markup help with AI search.
4. Independent sources have to corroborate you
When a system has to pick three companies out of thirty candidates, it favours the ones where separate sources say compatible things. One glowing self-description carries less weight than three neutral mentions across unrelated publications. This is the slow part, and it is the part almost nobody in Malaysia is working on.
What to actually do, in order
| Order | Work | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| First | Technical crawlability and schema | Without this you are not retrieved, and nothing after it compounds |
| Second | Rewrite key pages at passage level | Being read is useless if nothing on the page is quotable |
| Third | Fix entity consistency everywhere | Contradictions cause a model to skip you rather than risk a wrong claim |
| Fourth | Build third-party citations | This is what tips a candidate into a named recommendation |
Doing the fourth before the first three is the most expensive mistake in this field. The coverage arrives, the model still cannot quote you, and the budget is gone. That sequencing is why citation building only runs after the foundation work in a full AI SEO engagement.
How long it takes
Structural changes can affect selection within weeks once pages are recrawled. Citation work runs on publication cycles and generally shows up over three to six months. Nobody controls either timeline precisely, and anyone quoting you a fixed date is guessing.
A note on gaming it
There is a growing amount of advice about stuffing pages with statements designed to be lifted verbatim by a model. Some of it works briefly. All of it carries the same risk that keyword stuffing did, which is that the systems get better at spotting it faster than the tactic scales. Write things that are true, specific and checkable. That is the version that survives.
